Have an insurance estimate? Bring it when your vehicle is inspected so the proposed work can be compared with the damage.
The shop explains the repairs and charges; your insurer determines coverage and claim payment. Discuss your deductible, any uncovered work and payment arrangements before authorizing the repair.
Existing paperwork
The claim number, insurer's estimate and supporting photos establish what has already been reviewed. Differences in parts or operations can explain why estimates do not match.
Additional damage
New findings may require a revised estimate or supplement. That revision should identify the added work and any effect on cost or timing.
Coverage and payment
The deductible may not be the only amount payable by the customer. Policy terms, coverage decisions and any uncovered work affect the final balance.
Rental and transport
Towing, storage and rental benefits have their own coverage terms. A longer repair does not automatically extend a rental allowance.
Repair questions
Can I choose my repair shop in California?
Yes. California's Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights gives you the choice of shop for body damage covered by your insurer. The claim's coverage and payment terms still apply.
What if the insurer's estimate differs from the repair estimate?
The difference may involve parts, labor or newly identified damage. Those items need to be reconciled with the insurer's coverage decision and the work you authorize.
